The Shops at Sunset Place, once known as The Bakery Center, holds a rich history steeped in nostalgia and transformation. Originally opened in 1986, the Bakery Center was home to the iconic Holsum Bread Bakery, filling the air with the delightful aroma of fresh bread. For many, the scent was a comforting reminder of home, a staple as familiar as the vibrant nightlife at the nearby Parallel Bar. Fast forward to the present, and the area has undergone significant changes, with the sunset of some establishments but the promise of revitalization on the horizon.
In 1996, the Bakery Center transitioned into the Shops at Sunset Place, marking a new chapter in its story. This outdoor shopping mall opened in 1999, becoming a hotspot for dining, entertainment, and retail. Over the years, it welcomed many tenants, including a bustling AMC theater and popular eateries. However, in recent years, the tide has turned, with closures like Panera Bread, Yumbrella, Armani Exchange, Gallery Z, FAO Schwartz, and Jimmy’s BBQ leaving the space seemingly barren.
Despite these challenges, a new vision is taking shape for Sunset Place. Acquired by Midtown Opportunities in January 2021 for $65.5 million, the site is poised for a massive redevelopment project aimed at transforming the area into a thriving community hub. The proposed plans include over 1,500 residential units and approximately 350,000 square feet of retail space, promising a resurgence of foot traffic and vibrancy. As one developer noted, “It’s really about creating a community,” which underscores the intent to breathe life back into this once-thriving destination.
Famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes.” This sentiment rings true for Sunset Place, as the community rallies around the vision of renewal. Just as Wright embraced the evolution of design to enhance living spaces, the upcoming redevelopment aims to create an inviting environment that reflects the needs and desires of South Miami residents.
