Growth happens when you invest in yourself and your vision.

On January 9, 2025, the Greater Kendall Business Association hosted its first luncheon of the year. Members gathered with excitement to kick off a prosperous new year. Chairman Carlos Rivero warmly welcomed attendees, wishing everyone success in 2025. He introduced a new initiative: speed networking. This interactive exercise helped participants connect in fresh, engaging ways.
The highlight of the event was keynote speaker Scott Byrd, Director of Outreach and Entrepreneur Recruitment for the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program (10KSB) at Miami Dade College. Miami Dade College President Bryan Stewart and Dean Pamela Fuertes Beri were present to support this transformative program.
Scott Byrd brought 20 years of expertise in lending and finance to his presentation. As director, he oversees participant recruitment, partnerships, and support services. He explained how the 10KSB program helps small business owners develop actionable growth strategies through a structured 13-week curriculum. With his approachable style, Byrd simplifies complex financial concepts, making them accessible to everyone.
Byrd’s background is inspiring. Before joining Miami Dade College, he served 12 years in the U.S. Navy. He has also taken on significant civic roles, including chairing the Academy of Finance, the Greater Miami Chamber’s Leadership Miami program, and District Governor for Toastmasters. His dedication to leadership and community is evident.
Under Byrd’s guidance, the 10KSB program has flourished. Scholars, or participants, benefit from a “Mini MBA” experience at no cost. Since 2010, Goldman Sachs has invested $750 million into the program, helping 20,000 businesses increase revenue and create jobs. The program combines education and networking to empower entrepreneurs.
The curriculum, designed by Babson College, focuses on growth strategies tailored to small business owners. Scholars engage in peer-group learning, one-on-one advising, and collaboration with subject matter experts. After graduation, they join a national network of 14,000 alumni. Locally, Byrd continues to foster connections for graduates, ensuring lasting impact.
One unique aspect of the program is the development of a personalized growth plan. This plan aligns resources and action steps to help businesses scale. As Byrd noted, “Many feel alone in business. This program proves you’re not.” The 96% graduation rate highlights its success and the value scholars find in committing to the process.
A Famous Quote
As Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” Byrd’s work and the 10KSB program embody this idea. The program connects business owners, fostering collaboration and mutual growth, creating a supportive environment for success.
Takeaway
The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program is more than education—it’s a community. It empowers business owners with the tools, networks, and strategies needed to thrive.
