Many Hollywood celebrities made an overtly political fashion statement Sunday at the 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, pinning blue ribbons emblazoned with the ACLU acronym onto their clothes.
The blue ribbons symbolized support for the American Civil Liberties Union, an organization that has battled the Trump administration ever since President Donald Trump took office in January.
The ACLU has been the driving force behind many of the legal challenges to Trump’s immigration policies, according to Breitbart. It has also taken a strong position against Trump’s proposed ban on transgender people serving in the military.
The ACLU is currently promoting the Dream Act of 2017, and has urged individuals to ask their members of Congress to co-sponsor the bill, which would supposedly protect 800,000 DACA participants who are supposedly “at risk of losing their permission to live and work in the United States.”
The Dream Act seems to be in line with the ACLU’s overall perspective on illegal immigrants, as the organization has previously sued Miami for following Trump’s immigration policies.
According to the ACLU’s website, “mandatory and disproportionate” immigration laws in the U.S. “needlessly separate families.”
Among the Hollywood celebrities donning blue ribbons in support of the ACLU were Silicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon, a writer and producer.
