Mirvish announces promising new season with five musicals – The Globe and Mail

The pre-Broadway run of the Newfoundland-set musical Come From Away, the latest spectacle from Quebec circus troupe The 7 Fingers, a thriller from Toronto playwright Nicolas Billon – and Canadian stage legend Fiona Reid as Queen Elizabeth II.
All feature prominently in the 2016-2017 Mirvish Productions lineup announced on Tuesday morning, one that gives fans of Canadian theatre plenty to celebrate.
Commercial producer David Mirvish’s main seven-show subscription series features five musicals in total – starting with the final pre-Broadway stop ofCome From Away, a heart-warming musical from the Toronto-based husband-and-wife team of David Hein and Irene Sankoff, set in Gander after planes from around the world were diverted there on 9/11.
Two West End musicals adapted from movies arrive next in February, 2017:The Bodyguard, based on the 1992 romantic thriller starring Whitney Houston; and Mrs Henderson Presents, adapted from a 2005 Judi Dench movie about a widow who adds nudity to the bill at a London theatre during the Second World War….

STAMFORD, CT—Tribute Portfolio, part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, has signed a new boutique hotel in Denver.
Slated to open in September 2018, the 165-room new-build will be situated in Lower Highlands (LoHi) on the west side of downtown Denver. Marking the 14th property signing since launching last April, Tribute Portfolio is poised to double its initial first-year growth projections, with more than 20 hotels open or in queue by this spring, according to Starwood.
The new hotel, whose name will be released later this year, will offer Linger, a bar and restaurant located in a former mortuary, and Little Man Ice Cream, built in a 28-ft. tall, 14,000-lb. cream can. In addition to offering views of downtown Denver from its rooms and rooftop, the new LoHi hotel will also be near Downtown Denver, numerous art museums and venues and local sports arenas, Pepsi Center, Mile High Stadium and Coors Field, according to Starwood Hotels & Resorts.
Tribute Portfolio debuted in April 2015 with its first hotel, the Royal Palm South Beach Miami, and has since opened five additional properties: the Great Northern Hotel in London; The Kiroro Resort in Hokkaido, Japan; The Hermitage in Jakarta, Indonesia; the SLS Las Vegas in Las Vegas; and the Riviera Palm Springs in Palm Springs, CA.

Suzy Batlle: Ex-banker hit sweet spot founding Azucar Ice Cream,

Suzy Batlle didn’t know anything about running a business when she founded Azucar Ice Cream 4½ years ago. But her chosen career as a banker came to an abrupt halt after 20 years when the industry plummeted in 2008. With two children to care for as a single mother, she had to come up with another way to make a living.
Ice cream is a part of Ms. Batlle’s life, centered on her family’s love for one another and close ties. Her grandmother made it in Cuba using the fruits she brought back from Central and South America that she found when traveling with her husband, who was a sugar mill engineer.
Ms. Batlle’s grandmother didn’t continue to make ice cream when she moved to Miami, but the entire family still ate it together every night.
Given her heritage and family time centered on ice cream, Ms. Batlle decided to open her shop in Little Havana – which she describe as more Cuban now than Cuba – and decorate it as authentically as possible with touches like replicas of old Cuban tiles for the floors and seating made from Guayabera shirts.
Little by little, Ms. Batlle learned how many details go into to opening and running a business. She had no idea the permitting process would be so challenging but she changed a space that was once an art gallery into a restaurant, which took nine months to sort out before the shop opened.
Today, Ms. Batlle said, the business is flourishing. She attributes Azucar’s success to its ever-changing flavors. It’s fun, she said, because there are always the staples but mixed in are different ice creams for customers to try, like the one comprised of Guinness beer with chocolate ice cream.
Ms. Batlle is at the shop every single day and said she likely spends 80 hours working each week.
But she’s not alone and depends on her staff of 14, each one of whom she considers family. 
It was an unexpected challenge to manage employees when Ms. Batlle first started the business. All of a sudden, she had others working for her and was taken aback by feeling she was in charge of them and pretty much everything else going on in her life. The point at which she really grew, Ms. Batlle said, was when she faced the fact that she was responsible for her own two children as well as the employees who she calls her children at work.
They feel like family now and together are working on selling Azucar ice cream to American Airlines sky chefs along with hotels and area restaurants.

First Fridays moving to new home | SaukValley.com

MOUNT MORRIS – The First Fridays Open Stage music show is moving Feb. 5 to its new location at Pinecrest Grove Community Center and Theater, just off of McKendrie Street at 500 Evergreen Lane.
Organizers say this is the second change of venue for First Fridays in its history, which has spanned about 15 years.

Registration begins at 6 p.m., with the show at 7. Food and beverages are available for purchase from the McKendrie Street Cafe.
Each musician or band performs for 15 minutes. Instruments are acoustic, and a professional sound system is provided. The music will include country, bluegrass, blues, gospel, folk, soft rock, and eclectic mixes of the different styles. Admission is by donation. All musicians and spectators are welcome.
