Lead, follow or get out of the way

By Armando P. Trabanco, Banking Executive.
As leaders we are trained and prepared to take the helm at a given moment.  We believe we have all the answers and know the best course of action at any given time.  The truth be told, no one can do it all and address every problem, and those who try end up burning out at a very early age and or suffering a massive heart attack.

Reality is that true leaders know their strengths and weaknesses, and position themselves to where their strengths can compliment and benefit the team and the organization as a whole. They have a keen eye for talent and hire to insure that all bases are covered.  They understand from their journey, that the best way to motivate top talent is to give them the tools necessary and allow them to execute (they get out of the way.) Checks and balances are normal and not an unnecessary burden taking away from productivity.  Nothing demotivates a team more than a leader who stops leading, and starts micro-managing.  Successful teams understand the goals and mission being undertaken and more importantly how their role adds to the bottom line.  If they lack this basic understanding, then production, morale and success fail to materialize.
If your team is not performing at expected levels, you should ask yourself a few questions; 1) Have I provided the team with the tools and support necessary to succeed?  (Are you leading?) 2) Do they understand how their role impacts the organization, the importance of their contributions and are they allowed to execute?(Are they able to execute? Follow.) (3)  Am I enhancing or hindering progress?  (Get out of their way!!!)

Christian Chamber of Greater Miami 2015-2019

Christian Chamber of Greater Miami 2015-2019
The Christian Chamber of Greater Miami (CCOGM) journeyed on a path of faith and community service that began in 2015. As the sun rose on April 15th of that year, over 130 business professionals representing a myriad of faiths and cultures convened at the Devon Seafood restaurant in Kendall. This was not just another networking event; it marked the genesis of a vision by Kent Crook, a veteran business leader with a heart committed to Miami.
Kent Crook’s deep-seated commitment to the community is evident in his multifaceted engagements. Serving South Florida for over three decades, he has played pivotal roles in various organizations, focusing on business, health, education, and conservation. His journey has always been about more than business; it’s about lighting up the community both literally, with his solar energy contributions, and metaphorically, with his leadership.
Under the auspices of CCOGM, the aim was clear: guide, encourage, and provide opportunities for the faithful to impact the community positively.
In the coming months within the first year, the Chamber’s wings spread wider. Spearheaded by Wilson Alvarez, who was handpicked by Kent, the organization saw rapid growth. Within a mere six months, membership skyrocketed to 100, with events occurring twice monthly. As time progressed, branches sprouted in Broward, Homestead, and Kendall.
The Chamber’s partnership with local organizations such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Christ Fellowship’s Backpack Program, and Read2Succeed resonates with its mission. While the Fellowship of Christian Athletes worked tirelessly to influence individuals via coaches and athletes, the Backpack Program took on the monumental task of ensuring no child went to bed hungry. On the other hand, Read2Succeed tackled the pressing issue of illiteracy among children, driving them toward academic excellence.
Thomas Edison once said, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” This resonates with the Chamber’s journey, which, despite its successes, faced challenges with the advent of the Covid crisis. Many organizations, including CCOGM, faced unprecedented trials. But the legacy Kent Crook established, and the Chamber’s footprint in the community, is a testament that with faith, persistence, and unity, there will always be a dawn after the darkest night.
The takeaway? The journey of CCOGM serves as a beacon for organizations worldwide. It exemplifies how faith, combined with action and collaboration, can create waves of positive change, even in challenging times.
As we await the Christian Chamber’s new chapter, let us remember the legacy, the impact, and the vision set forth. For anyone inspired by this tale, now is the time to act, to join hands and be the change-makers our communities so desperately need. Because the story of CCOGM is far from over; it’s merely waiting for its next chapter to be written by people like you.

Inaugural Luncheon is Wednesday April 15th, 2015

In prayer and in faith, we have started a new chamber in Miami to help business professionals encourage one another and have another way to spread compassion, peace and love into our community. The Christian Chamber of Greater Miami (CCOGM) offers guidance, encouragement and opportunities for all people of faith to serve the community. The goal of this organization is for business leaders to provide needed resources and mentorship to the under resourced children/future leaders attending our local schools. Our contributions will allow children to experience learning success and become lifelong learners and contributing members of our community and the world while experiencing God’s love.
CCOGM has been started by Kent Crook who has been serving South Florida for over 30 years as a successful business owner.  His commitment to the community has led him to serve on boards for several business organizations.  He is a trustee and board member of Chamber South, a member of the Pinecrest Business Association, Palmetto Bay Business Association, Greater Chamber of Commerce, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and Greater Kendall Business Association.
In the health field, he is second Vice Chair of CHI (Community Health Center of South Florida) and a member of the Associates of South Miami Hospital. He was Chair of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in West Kendall. In education, he has been a member of EESAC (Educational Excellence School Advisory Council) of Miami Palmetto Senior High. He has donated both his time and solar energy tools to both the Miami-Dade College Environmental Research Center, Terra Environmental Research Institute and LED lighting and solar panels to Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart to help educate the students on the fundamentals of solar energy and its long-term positive effects on the environment.  In the conservation field, he is on the Board of Directors of Florida Alliance for Renewable Energy and a member of the U.S Green Building Council.
CCOGM guided by Kent Crook will help raise awareness and much needed help for three wonderful organizations in our community: the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Christ Fellowship’s Backpack Program and Read 2 Succeed.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes vision is to see every person in the South Florida Counties of Miami-Dade and Monroe impacted through the influence of coaches and athletes.
With 1 out of 4 children in South Florida going to bed hungry each night, the Christ Fellowship’s Backpack Program partners with local businesses and other organizations to feed hungry children in our community.
Read2Succeed strives to create a stronger community by decreasing the illiteracy rates in children and help all minority families become self-sufficient. Read2Succeed is a community partnership that empowers youth and families by providing academic enrichment, educational & literacy services.
CCOGM will help guide leaders to grow the corporate culture in Miami towards a Godly path to their benefit as well as to serve their community.

“Boss, if we could just cut our price 15%, we have a chance at the business.”
Tired of hearing your salespeople say that?  The problem isn’t your pricing, it’s your people.
Somewhere they’ve learned that a good way to compete is to cut the price, and they’ve gotten away with it.  Your job as a professional manager is to train your salespeople to compete, plant their feet, and win the business…on something other than price.  Train your salespeople to keep customers loyal to you regardless of price because your company offers something the customer will have to give up if he or she buys on price alone.
